Leave a Better Trace

We take responsibility for our environmental impact by leaving things better than we found them. You (yes, you!) have a massive impact on the condition of our beautiful Glade – if everybody does their bit, we can keep our site sparkling (and ensure we keep getting invited back!).

The area that we will call home for the duration of this event, is home all year for many wildlife and even includes protected grasslands. It is imperative that we leave nothing behind and do not harm the environment while we gather here so make sure that things are considered thoughtfully

What is MOOP?

M-O-O-P = Matter Out Of Place. This is Burner short-hand for anything that’s not in its rightful place.

This includes rubbish, cigarette butts, food waste, stray bits that have fallen off someone’s outfit, that cup someone put down that’s been sitting there for two days… you get the idea. The best way to manage MOOP is not to let it hit the ground, but failing that, be an LBT hero and pick up anything that’s not supposed to be there.

Waste

♻️ Attendees are to follow the self-reliance principle and dispose of their own general waste (pack in – pack out). Exceptions may be made for those who would not be able to attend without this assistance, upon prior arrangement. Contact lbt@burningnest.co.uk in advance to discuss.

♻️ Recycling and compost facilities will be available, until the recycling bins are full. One bag of recycling per person will be accepted during supervised hours each day (11am-3pm) – outside of this, PEEP holes will be available for small quantities of LOOSE recycling. Attendees are encouraged to minimise waste onsite by removing extra packaging at home.

♻️ All recycling must be clean, dry and free of food. The recycling company will not accept contaminated recycling waste (ie dirty or mixed with unrecyclable materials) and will dispose of the whole bin as general waste, at a higher cost, if found. The recyclables are to be put into clear bin bags with paper/cardboard separated out.

♻️ No large quantities of citrus, fruit stickers, cutlery or plastic (even ‘compostible’ plastic) to be put in the compost pit. No human or animal bodily excretions to be composted. Only unbleached, undyed tissue or paper in the compost.

♻️ Glass should be avoided for LBT and H&S reasons. Personal glass items should not be taken onto the event areas (except for bar donations). Attendees should take home any glass as there will be NO GLASS RECYCLING, however a receptacle for broken glass will be provided outside of PEEPS for urgent use.

♻️ Aluminium drink cans will be collected separately and bought back by a metal recycling company to recuperate waste management costs. Bags containing steel cans or other metals will be rejected by the company and must go through general recycling streams.

Fire

🔥 Off-the-ground fires only

Small, contained fires are only permitted if they are raised fully off the ground in a suitable fire bowl, brazier or similar container. Fires must not scorch, burn or mark the ground underneath.

🔥 Top Field (Upstairs)

Off-the-ground fires are permitted in the Top Field, provided they are kept safe, contained, supervised, and fully extinguished after use.

🔥 Bottom Field / protected grasslands (Downstairs)

The Bottom Field includes sensitive and protected grassland areas. Fires in this area require specific permission from DPW / Site Lead / LBT before being lit. Please do not assume that because someone else has a fire, yours is also OK.

🔥 Never leave a fire unattended

All fires must be supervised at all times. Keep them small, controlled, and away from tents, structures, decorations, vehicles, fuel, dry grass and anything flammable. Make sure you have water or another safe means of extinguishing the fire nearby.

🔥 What you can burn

Only burn clean, dry, untreated wood.

🔥 Do not burn

  • MDF, chipboard, plywood or laminate
  • Painted, stained, varnished or pressure-treated wood
  • Pallets unless you are certain they are untreated and safe
  • Plastic, foam, rubber, fabric or synthetic materials
  • Cardboard with tape, plastic coating, labels, stickers or glossy print
  • Food packaging
  • Rubbish, recycling or MOOP

Burning treated, painted or mixed materials can release toxic fumes and leaves behind contaminated ash and debris. It is also horrible for the land, wildlife and your fellow Nestlings’ lungs.

🔥 Ash and fire waste

Ash, charcoal and fire debris are not compost and must not be tipped into hedges, grassland, compost pits, toilets or recycling.

Before disposal:

  • Let ash and charcoal cool completely.
  • Douse with water if needed.
  • Check carefully that there are no hot embers.
  • Bag it securely once cold.
  • Take it home with your general waste.

If it came with you, it leaves with you, even if it has been on fire.

Top tips

Before the event

  • Decorations with sequins, glitter, fake feathers, Styrofoam, fake leaves, plastic flowers etc create small pieces of litter from wear and tear that becomes challenging to fully remove from the ground after the event. Please avoid bringing any clothes, accessories, props and decorations with these to the event and be mindful of how things may deteriorate over time in potentially rough conditions.
  • Look for public transport or ride-share options to and from Nest
  • Get the new burner bus to and from London!
  • Remove and recycle excess packaging before you arrive on site.
  • Decant anything stored in glass into alternative containers

During the event

  • Wear a portable cup or drink bottle (hint: carabiner clip yours to a belt to stay ready for gifted beverages!).
  • Don’t use disposable bowls/plates/cutlery
  • Ensure toiletries are biodegradable and safe for nature, especially if you’re disposing of grey water on site
  • Use a sieve to strain organic waste out of grey water. Grey water should be spread into hedgerows, away from other campers and water sources.
  • Smoking? Bring a mint container or similar as a portable ashtray. No butts!
  • Avoid glitter, feathers, rhinestones, costumes that drop MOOP. Our Strike team can’t tell whether your glitter was biodegradable or not, so it all has to be picked up! You’ll still look fabulous without it 😉
  • MOOP-sweep your camping area daily. If you see some stray MOOP in other places, take
one for the team and pick it up as well

After the event

  • MOOP sweep your whole camping area and then go one step further and check the space around you too. We can leave this place spotless if we all work together.
  • Join us for Strike! Sign up at the Gate Hub during the event.
  • Got excess food at the end of the event? Leave it with the Collexodus team at the gate on departure and we’ll donate it to local food banks. Only in-date, unopened items and fresh food that has not expired will be accepted.
  • Take some lost and found items home with you and help return things to their owners as one of our team of Post Pals! Sign up at the Parti(cipation) Hub during the event.

Lost Property

★ Between Sunday 24th May and Monday the 25th, all leftover lost property will be photographed and packed up by our fabulous team of Lost Property Postmasters

★ A team of Post Pals will each take a small amount of Lost Property home with them, to post to the owners (at the owner’s expense) or collect in-person (if feasible).

★ Anything unclaimed after one month will be donated to charity.

★ PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE regularly check for your lost items (even if you don’t realise you’ve lost anything) and make sure you collect all your things before you go! It takes a lot of time, space and energy for our volunteers to return everything so please help lighten the load for us!
